Knockinaam Lodge

Set into a private cove on Scotland's south-west tip, Knockinaam Lodge looks out across the Irish Sea toward Northern Ireland. The 19th-century house sits three miles from Portpatrick and eight from the ferry port at Cairnryan, reached by road or by its own helipad. Thirty acres of garden run down to the beach below. Ten bedrooms and suites are individually decorated, most facing the water, the rest onto the garden; Churchill, one of the largest, is the room Winston Churchill stayed in, and the house also hosted his wartime meetings with Dwight D. Eisenhower ahead of D-Day. Egyptian cotton sheets and Galloway-made toiletries are standard throughout. Dinner runs to a seven-course tasting menu, changed daily and built around ingredients grown in the hotel's own polytunnel or sourced within 50 miles, earning the restaurant three AA Rosettes. The cellar holds over 350 wines, poured by the glass through a Coravin system so bottles stay fresh. Outside, The Cove offers a wood-burning stove and open sea views for slower hours between meals. It is a small, quiet base. Guests can arrange stargazing under dark rural skies, whisky tastings at nearby distilleries, or river fishing along the coast, all built around the pace of the house rather than a fixed programme.
