Kokonga Lodge

Turquoise water fills the pool deck, framed by the Kakanui Ranges rising beyond the lawn. Kokonga Lodge sits across the road from the Taieri River, on 5 hectares of established gardens in the Maniototo basin of Central Otago. The main building stands on the site of the old schoolteacher's house, and the original Kokonga School, built in 1897, remains next door, recently restored. Six ensuite rooms fill the lodge, each with mountain or garden views, plus a separate two-storey cottage with two bedrooms and its own kitchen and lounge. Some ceilings slope under the roofline; guests over six feet are asked to say so at booking. You can hear little beyond birdsong and the wind through the garden. Breakfast is included and served each morning; dinner, a set two-course menu, runs by prior arrangement. Outside, sheltered decks catch the sun for alfresco meals when weather allows. The Otago Central Rail Trail passes directly opposite, with a covered bike shed and e-bike charging point for guests riding in or out. Dunedin lies roughly an hour and a quarter away by road, Queenstown just over two hours. Adults only, with a house library, WiFi throughout, and easy access to the Taieri River for fishing.
