Kolkuós Guesthouse

Standing where a rock-edged estuary once sheltered trading ships, the guesthouse at Kolkuós occupies a building raised in 1903, its lower floor finished that year and the upper storey completed in 1904. The house sat empty and fell to ruin after its last residents left in 1984. Renovation began in 2010 and finished in 2014, with the exterior kept close to its original form while the inside was fitted out as a small hotel. Four double rooms each have a private bathroom. A shared lounge, dining room, and fully equipped kitchen serve the whole house, which can be booked room by room or taken over entirely. Rooms are bright and simply furnished. Breakfast runs to a buffet and continental spread each morning. You can walk out to the shoreline, where a reef offshore still breaks the waves as it has for centuries. Glaumbær Farm & Museum sits nearby, within easy reach for a day trip. Free parking is provided on site. The land around the house carries its own history, once a trading port linked to the bishopric at Hólar and now home to a herd of horses grazing the same ground. It is a quiet base, built on old foundations.
