Kosindo River Lodge

Founded and run entirely by residents of Kajana, Kosindo River Lodge sits 100 metres from the village, linked by forest trail to five others along the Gran Rio. This stretch of Upper Suriname is among the most remote inhabited parts of the river system, reached by bus from Paramaribo to Atjoni and then by boat, or by small aircraft to a nearby airstrip. The lodge runs on solar power throughout. Huts are built from local materials, with thatch and timber standing open to the forest air; no air conditioning is fitted or needed, since cross-ventilation keeps the rooms cool. The Jungle Hut sleeps two to three and looks straight into the canopy. The River View Lodge holds four to six and wakes to the sound of the current below its terrace. Days run on river time: a boat trip past riverside villages, a guided walk through primary forest with a tracker who points out medicinal plants and birdlife, an evening trip out to spot caiman by torchlight. You can hear the river from every hut after dark. Meals are Surinamese, cooked with local ingredients and shared with the village that built the place. It is a working arrangement, not a performance for visitors.
