Kuwera Eco Lodge

Built around existing trees rather than clearing them, Kuwera Eco Lodge keeps its bungalows scattered under a canopy that still shelters flying foxes and the occasional loris. No fence separates the grounds from the surrounding village of Udawalayagama, so mornings arrive with a mix of birdsong and everyday sound: a rooster, a radio prayer, children walking to the well. The lodge has nine bungalows in total, one holding a pair of standard rooms, three set up as family rooms, the rest simple doubles with a queen bed and private bathroom. One room opens onto a private garden shower, a small enclosure open to the sky. It is a compact stay. Meals draw on an organic garden grown without pesticides, supplemented by local growers who follow the same rule, and the kitchen mixes Sinhalese dishes with occasional international plates. A yoga pavilion sits amid the greenery for morning or evening classes, and the on-site Ayurveda centre offers massage after a day on the road. That day is likely to include Sigiriya Rock Fortress, fifteen minutes off, or the moss-covered ruins of Polonnaruwa an hour away. Minneriya National Park, where elephant herds gather at the tank between June and September, sits forty minutes out. Bicycles and a swimming pool cover the quieter hours in between.
