La Fora Ecolodge
The view runs two ways at once: west to Brava Island across open Atlantic water, east to the bare cone of Fogo's Caldera. La Fora Ecolodge is built into the Caldera's western slope, high enough above São Filipe to catch the sea breeze and lose the town's heat and noise. Each guest sleeps in a private bungalow with its own outdoor seating, an ensuite bathroom, and a path threading down through garden beds planted only with species found on Fogo itself. It is a compact stay. Power comes entirely from an eighteen-panel solar array that doubles as the carport roof, and hot water runs off gravity-fed solar tanks on the hill above the restaurant. Greywater from sinks and showers is piped straight back into the gardens; nothing sprayed touches the soil, which is volcanic, rich, and worked with local goat manure and compost instead. Bungalows need no air conditioning, cooled by ceiling vents and window placement that pull the sea air through. At the open-air bar and restaurant, guests eat from the garden and watch the sun drop behind Brava over a glass of the house sangria. Two bungalow types are on offer, double and triple, both with in-room WiFi and private terrace seating. A dip pool on the deck stays cool without machinery, shared on occasion with resident kingfishers.
