La Maison Vanille
Set back from the sand in Ngaparou, on Senegal's coast, La Maison Vanille is a small guest house built around a pool and its own stretch of shaded terrace. The rooms sit close together under one roof, each with air conditioning, a flat-screen with Netflix, a walk-in shower and a safe. The suite adds a centre-set bathtub. It is a compact stay. Val and Gerald, who run the house themselves, greet guests personally and steer them toward restaurants and excursions rather than leaving them to a front desk. A restaurant operates Thursday to Sunday evenings, and the bar stays open through the day. Breakfast is included with every room. Outside, the pool has its own small beach edge for cooling off between excursions, and the wider coast gives onto the pirogue trips of the Somone lagoon, the fishing port at Mbour, and the shell island of Joal-Fadiouth. You can arrange a Bandia reserve safari or a baobab rope course through the house rather than a tour desk. Daily housekeeping is standard, and airport transfers can be arranged on request. Massage is available by booking. The result is closer to staying with hosts who happen to run a small hotel than a hotel that happens to have hosts, and the coastal town around it stays walkable and unhurried.
