Loapi, Tswalu

Set where the true Kalahari gives way to arid savanna, Tswalu covers 118,000 hectares on the southern edge of the Northern Cape, divided by the red dunes and rocky slopes of the Korannaberg range. It is South Africa's largest privately protected reserve. The land was farmed hard before 1999, when the Oppenheimer family took on a restoration project begun by a previous owner, returning grazed ground to something closer to its original state. Eighty-five mammal species and 264 bird species now share the terrain, including desert black rhino, Kalahari black-maned lion, African wild dog and brown hyena, alongside oryx, giraffe and springbok moving across the dune roads. Guests get a private vehicle, guide and tracker for every stay, which means no shared sightings and no fixed route. Three camps sit across the reserve: Loapi, Motse and Tarkuni. Loapi's six homes stand at least 50 metres apart, each with a plunge pool and its own house manager and chef. Guided walks track porcupine and aardvark prints across the sand. A night on a star bed, under canvas or open sky, is as close as the Kalahari gets to indoors. Check-in runs from 2pm.
