Luang Say Lodge

Arrival is by boat, the Mekong the only road in and out of Pak Beng. Luang Say Lodge is built into four hectares of riverbank land, jungle-covered mountains rising behind it, on the river's left bank. Built in 1998, the lodge holds twenty bungalows in solid teak and rosewood, each set on raised platforms among planted gardens rather than cleared ground. Wooden walkways link the bungalows to a central restaurant on the riverbank. It is a quiet arrangement. Each bungalow runs to 33 m² and opens through large windows onto the Mekong and the mountains beyond, with a ceiling fan, mosquito net, and a private bathroom fitted with a hot shower. You can hear the river at night through the open windows, no glass between the room and the forest. The restaurant serves Lao food from a buffet, much of it grown in the lodge's own gardens or bought from villages nearby, alongside a continental breakfast and a full bar. Evenings run to a drink on the riverbank as the light drops over the water. There is no road link; every stay begins and ends on the river, which sets the pace of the place more than any schedule does. Check-in runs from 7am, check-out by 4:30pm.
