Mai Chau Lodge

Opened in 2007, Mai Chau Lodge was built as a base for exploring the valley of the same name, three hours by road from Hanoi. The lodge sits on Mo Luong Lake, ringed by rice paddies and mountains, in a valley long worked by White Thai communities. It has 16 rooms. Eight glamping domes stand at a separate campsite by a lotus pond. Rooms carry dark wood furniture and handwoven textiles in the colours of local weaving, and the Junior Suite, the largest category at 50 m², opens onto a balcony facing the lake and valley beyond. A five-minute walk down the lane leads to a White Thai village, then another, where houses stand on stilts and buffalo graze between the paddies. Guests can borrow bicycles free of charge to cover that ground at a slower pace. The Bo Luong restaurant looks over the rice fields and a lily pond and serves Vietnamese and regional northwest dishes alongside international plates. The lodge also runs a sauna, jacuzzi, and swimming pool, along with kayaking on the lake and cooking classes with local chefs. A buffet breakfast comes with the room rate. It remains, before anything else, a working point of entry into a farmed valley, not a resort apart from it.
