Malolo Island Resort

Malolo is named for a Fijian legend: the sun, Fijians say, comes to rest each evening behind this island, and the resort takes its emblem from that story. It is a family-owned property, held entirely by a local Fijian family, and staffed largely by descendants of the villagers of nearby Yaro. The resort sits inside its own fringing coral reef, and the water stays calm enough for snorkelling straight off the sand. There are 46 bures in five categories, from Island and Oceanview rooms to two adults-only Tadra Bures at the resort's quiet end, each over 50 square metres with a four-poster bed and its own verandah. Family Bures sleep up to seven. None of the rooms carry a television or phone; the resort deliberately leaves guests to disconnect. Three restaurants and three bars run the length of the property, including a beach-level spot for wood-fired pizza and sunset drinks, and a Treetops restaurant among the palms for evening dining. A boat trip of fifteen minutes reaches Mociu, a private island reserve the resort leased in 2018, where fishing and shell collecting are forbidden under a Fijian marine tabu. Guided dives run to 44 sites across the Mamanucas, including a wartime wreck. Check-in runs from 3pm.
