Manoir Chamberland

Stone walls, Frette linens and a Nespresso machine on the nightstand: Manoir Chamberland is a former presbytery turned eight-room hotel in downtown Montebello. Monseigneur Chamberland built the rectory in 1938 for the parish next door; by the time the current owners bought it in 2015, water came in through the roof as freely as it fell outside. The five-year renovation replaced the wiring, plumbing and stonework, and added a pool, hot tub and pavilion in what had been an overgrown yard. Each room reads differently. Bathrooms run to heated floors and Italian Culti toiletries, with soaker tubs in most. A separate gardener's cottage stands apart from the main house, with its own entrance and heated marble floor. Outside, the two-acre garden holds more than 70 trees, a hundred rose bushes and a run of cedar hedges, with a croquet lawn and bocce court cut into the lawn. Breakfast, a three-course affair, is included with every room. The bar off the great room pours cocktails and espresso by the fire. Montebello itself is small, but Ottawa and Montreal are both within reach by road.
