Matangi Private Island Resort

Arrival is by boat or seaplane; there is no other way onto Matangi. The island itself is the shape of a volcanic crater, ringed by coral reef and lying off the coast of Taveuni in Fiji's Northern Division. It is an adults-only stay, built for couples rather than families. Accommodation runs to eight bures and three treehouses, each handcrafted by local artisans with bamboo ceilings, lava rock showers and coconut-thatched roofs. Oceanview Bures look out through coconut palms and manicured gardens; Beachfront Bures sit steps from the sand. The treehouses climb into the tropical canopy on stilts, with private sun decks and outdoor jacuzzis, while the Beachfront Treehouse Villa adds a plunge pool and its own dining area on a 1,750-square-foot deck. A two-bedroom bure occupies a private rocky point above the reef lagoon, the largest of the five room types. Meals are taken at the Vale-Ni-Kana dining room near the beach, drawing on tapioca, taro, breadfruit and reef fish, with a weekly lovo feast cooked in an underground earth oven. You can snorkel straight off the shore or dive the surrounding reef with the resort's own operation. Days otherwise run to kayaking, paddleboarding, a village tour on neighbouring Qamea, and an Ocean Spa for the evenings. Check-in runs from noon.
