Morrungulo Beach Lodge

Set directly on the sand along Mozambique's Inhambane coast, Morrungulo runs as a family-run resort between Inhambane and Vilanculos, roughly 560 km north of Maputo. Coconut palms line the property, and no 4x4 is needed to reach it. Seven beachfront chalets face the water, each with two bedrooms, a gas shower, and a small kitchen. Seven garden-view casitas stand just 35 m back, built over two floors for families needing more room. Campers get shaded, lawned pitches under coconut and indigenous trees, with open thatched barracas for cooking and gathering, and hot gas showers in the ablution blocks. A borehole supplies drinking water, so bottled water isn't necessary. The reef at Sylvia Shoal lies offshore, with coral gardens and drop-offs running 9 to 40 m deep; divers report manta rays, turtles, and potato bass, and whale sharks pass through in season. Humpback whales migrate by between June and November. Surf breaks form right in front of camp, good for longboards and bodyboards at higher tides, while low tide opens rock pools for children to explore. Birdwatchers have logged over 100 species here, among them the rare Green Tinkerbird and the malachite kingfisher. The onsite restaurant operates seasonally and requires pre-ordering. Evenings run quiet, with fresh lobster on offer and firelight under the palms.
