Nanmei Shinshitsu

Earthen floors, a kamado stove, red roof tiles reclaimed from an old house: the rooms at Nanmei Shinshitsu are built from what the village already had. It is a set of five restored houses scattered through settlements in Kunigami, on Okinawa's northern tip, between the Pacific and the East China Sea. Each stands on its own plot. Nakajo, in Kijoka village, keeps a wooden single-storey layout with an earthen entry and a mango tree in the garden; Kushi, in Jashiki, has a semi-open-air Goemon bath and a household altar still tended by the family that built it. At Unni, guests may hear the call of the Okinawa rail from the forest at the property's edge. Meals are cooked to order: breakfast rice made from a local recipe, sometimes cooked over the room's own kamado stove, and dinners built around Okinawan vegetables, meat and fish. Each stay comes with a Sherpa, a local guide who arranges village walks, forest tours and craft encounters with residents. Check-in starts at 3pm, and the houses are not step-free, in keeping with their original construction.
