Nekweta Surf Camp

Set two minutes on foot from the Roche Percée shore, Nekweta opens onto a coast where reef breaks sit just offshore and a coral islet edges the pass beyond. The water off the islet runs turquoise over white sand. Founded in 2006, the camp keeps two accommodation types: a large case built in wood and stone, and a two-room bungalow styled after Bali. Manu, the owner and skipper, was born in Bourail and has surfed and fished its waters most of his life; he runs the boat trips himself, out past the mangrove of the Néra river to the reef's false passes and the turtle bay. Guests can snorkel near the reef and spot eagle rays and turtles, and dolphins show up when the mood takes them. The surf here breaks only where a boat can reach it, at spots called Gouaro, Snorky and Secret, with a beach break at the Néra river mouth ten minutes on foot from camp. Meals run on request a day ahead. Stéphanie, who arrived from Marseille in 2003, cooks with vegetables from her own garden, market produce and fish from Manu's catch, served on the terrace under tropical planting. It is a small, working stay, not a resort.
