Ngumula Lodge

Set a hundred metres back from the sand, 25km south of Inhambane, Ngumula Lodge faces a reef that surfaces at low tide into shallow pools. It is a self-catering stretch of coast rather than a hotel. Eight houses, each sleeping eight, sit along what the lodge calls its golden mile, spaced for privacy and built around a wraparound deck and private plunge pool. Four air-conditioned bedrooms fill each house: two en suite with queen beds facing the deck, two sharing a bathroom behind. The kitchens run to SMEG ovens, deep freezers, and ice makers, and a manager is on site daily. Reef and sea shape the days. At low tide the water drops to reveal rock pools shallow enough for children, with coral and small fish close enough to watch without a mask. High tide brings boogie boarding and beach fishing, and boats can launch nearby at Coconut Bay. Humpback whales pass close to shore from July to November, visible from the deck without binoculars. Dive centres, restaurants, and a small shop lie a short walk or drive away at Coconut Bay and Jeff's, and Paindane, ranked among the world's better snorkelling spots, sits further along the same stretch. Fresh fish, prawns, and crayfish can be ordered through the manager. Bring a 4x4: the sand road in needs one, and beach driving itself is restricted to protect the dunes.
