Ngutuni Lodge

Bordered on three sides by Tsavo East National Park, Ngutuni Lodge stands on a private game sanctuary of 10,000 acres beneath the Sagala Hills. Grassland runs unbroken to the horizon here. The lodge itself is arranged in four blocks of guest rooms, 48 in total, and every one looks out over a watering hole where wildlife gathers through the day. Rooms are simple and well made, each with a double and a single bed, a separate bathroom, and a balcony with seating angled toward the water. Eight rooms interconnect, useful for families. Full board covers three courses at lunch and four at dinner, built from ingredients sourced locally rather than flown in. A pool, newly built, gives a break between drives. Game drives run at dawn and after dark, in adapted safari vehicles with guides who know the sanctuary and the park beyond it. Roads inside the reserve are mostly track rather than tarmac, so a 4x4 with decent clearance is the sound way in by private car. The lodge lies just off the main Mombasa-Nairobi highway north of Voi, roughly two and a half hours from the coast by road, and the Voi railway station is under twenty minutes from the sanctuary gate. You can watch elephant or buffalo come to drink without leaving the terrace.
