Nicky Amazon Lodge

Built from local timber and palm leaf inside the Cuyabeno Fauna Production Reserve, Nicky Amazon Lodge has run its river and forest excursions since the 2000s. Reaching it takes commitment: guests travel overland from Quito, then transfer to a motor canoe for the final approach along the Aguarico and Cuyabeno rivers, passing through Kichwa, Siona, and Secoya territory. The lodge counts seven palm-roofed cabins and 19 rooms, arranged as double, twin, matrimonial, triple, and family layouts. Each has a private bathroom with hot water, a mosquito net over the bed, and a balcony strung with a hammock. Walls stay partly open to the forest, so nights carry the full sound of the jungle rather than shutting it out. Waste at the lodge runs through biodigesters and filtration systems, and newer canoe motors have been switched to cut noise and emissions. Guides, many raised in nearby settlements, lead canoe rides through blackwater lagoons and walks by day and after dark, tracking monkeys, caimans, and the pink river dolphins that work the Cuyabeno's channels. The reserve holds over 500 recorded bird species. A shaded, open-air dining room serves meals built from regional ingredients. It is a lodge built for river time, not comfort for its own sake.
