Panhou Retreat
Set into the hillsides of Hoang Su Phi, in the mountains of Ha Giang, Panhou Retreat is built along terrain shaped by centuries of rice cultivation. The land here rises in terraces, bamboo forest gives way to tea hills, and the retreat's 40 bungalows and single three-bedroom villa follow the slope rather than cut into it. Each bungalow is built from bamboo, wood, and stone, materials drawn from the surrounding forest and local building traditions. Gardens surround the rooms. Guests can walk out from their bungalow directly into trekking routes that lead through Red Dao and Tay villages, where rice terraces turn silver in the water season and gold at harvest. Meals draw on produce picked from the retreat's own garden or bought from nearby growers, prepared with attention closer to fine dining than camp cooking. A traditional Red Dao herbal bath is offered on site, along with yoga and massage using local herbal oils. Most of the team is drawn from surrounding ethnic communities, trained in hospitality, cooking, and guiding. The retreat runs on a small hydroelectric system fed by a nearby stream and has planted trees to restore cleared hillsides. It is a quiet base for slow travel through a working highland landscape, not a resort built apart from it.
