Pasir Belanda

Set along a riverbank in a Kelantan village, Pasir Belanda trades sea view for a slower kind of coast: paddy, orchard and kampung lane, with Pantai Cahaya Bulan beach a short ride away. Chalets are timber-built and raised, each with its own bathroom, air conditioning and a kettle for coffee or tea. Rooms come in three grades: superior chalet, standard chalet, and the Cikgu garden chalet, named for the family that has long run the place. A pool sits in the garden alongside a playground and a fruit tree orchard. Bicycles are for hire, and a self-guided route of about 19 km loops out through fishing villages and rice fields to Kuala Besar and back. Along the way riders pass a kite maker, fish cracker workshops, and a wartime bunker. Batik painting and kite decoration are taught on site, both hands-on and both local crafts still practised in the village. You may pass a monkey gathering coconuts or a fisherman casting his net from the shore. Cooking classes run in the afternoon, and a traditional Malay massage can be arranged in the chalet itself. It is not a beach resort in the usual sense. Kota Bharu's city centre lies a short distance off, but the pace here stays rural, set by tide, orchard and river rather than by traffic.
