Pension Moana Beach

Stepping straight from the terrace onto sand, guests reach the lagoon at Pension Moana Beach without crossing a road. Both open onto the same stretch of private beach on Tahaa's west coast, with Bora Bora visible across the water. It is a small stay, easy to take in at a glance. Snorkelling starts right off the beach, where the lagoon holds coral and reef fish close to shore; kayaking, cycling and 4x4 trips can be arranged through the island's operators. Grace and Mathieu, the resident hosts, run the place themselves and handle transfers from Raiatea airport or the nearby quays on request. Breakfast is available for an extra charge, ordered the night before. A small snack bar sits a few hundred metres off, with a supermarket, rum distillery and pearl farm within a couple of kilometres for those who want to see more of the island. Evenings are given over to the sunset, watched from the same sand used for swimming by day. The setting is unhurried and specific to the lagoon it faces, not staged for scale.
