Reached only by longboat, Pingpe Jungle Resort sits on the Suriname River across from the village that gives it its name. The final approach comes after a road transfer to Atjoni and a run upriver of some hours, depending on water levels, past smaller settlements strung along the banks. It is a small camp. Six lodges make up the accommodation, each with a private bathroom and a porch wide enough for an extra hammock, should guests want to sleep out under the thatch. A local owner built the place to employ people from Pingpe and the surrounding villages, particularly the young, and staff lead most of the activity on-site.
Days run on foot and by boat. Guides walk visitors through the surrounding forest, pointing out medicinal plants and the crops grown on village garden plots, then return by korjaal along the river. Afternoons often mean swimming at Tapawatra Sula, a set of rapids upriver that doubles as a natural massage under the current. You can hear the jungle settle into quiet after dinner, when staff sometimes take guests out by boat to drift with the current, spotting caiman by torchlight. A restaurant and bar anchor the small site, with hammocks and chill-out spots scattered around for the hours in between.
