Posada Ayana

Set back a short walk from José Ignacio's town centre, Posada Ayana occupies a low-rise stretch of coast in Uruguay's Maldonado department. The inn holds eight rooms, each 40 to 58 square metres, furnished with vintage pieces sourced in Montevideo and Buenos Aires and restored to their own character. Three suites add private gardens or terraces, and a separate villa of 230 square metres sleeps up to six adults with its own pool and kitchen. It is adults-only, open to guests 18 and over. The infinity pool runs 16 metres, cooled by green marble and kept free of chlorine with a touch of sea salt instead. On site stands Ta Khut, a freestanding Skyspace by James Turrell, the first of its kind in South America and named a national site of interest by Uruguay's Ministry of Education and Culture in 2022. Guests can visit at sunrise and sunset without charge. Breakfast is cooked to order each morning from local, seasonal ingredients, and the kitchen pours its own Rosado Ayana wine alongside Uruguayan craft beer. Ceramics, soaps and woven wool blankets come from artisans working nearby, some by the José Ignacio lighthouse itself. La Huella and Playa Brava sit within walking distance, as does the Fundación Cervieri Monsuárez art space. The posada closes seasonally and reopens each October.
