Pousada Viseu

Stone cloisters meet clean modern lines here. Pousada Viseu is a former hospital, the Hospital de São Teotónio, raised in 1842 and reworked in 2009 by architect Gonçalo Byrne, who kept the old walls and cut new openings for light. The result sits in the historic centre of Viseu, a city known locally for its parks and old trees, with the building itself counted among its landmarks. Rooms are spacious, each with a balcony looking over the old town below. Guests can swim in the outdoor pool through the summer season or use the indoor pool year-round, and there is a gym, a sauna and a Turkish bath for slower mornings. The Viriato restaurant reworks dishes from the Beira region, kid from the oven, Lafões veal, cod, finishing with regional sweets like Pastel de Vouzela. On Saturdays the Mestre Grão Vasco cloister sometimes hosts piano or saxophone after dinner. The Salão Nobre offers a smaller, more private room for dinners or celebrations. Six event rooms can hold up to 400 people banquet-style, drawing conferences, product launches and wedding parties into the same stone arches once walked by hospital staff. It is a compact, walkable stay. Bicycles, a padel court and paid electric charging round out the practical side of things.
