Raimiti Fakarava
Fakarava's far shore, reached only by boat across the lagoon
Getting to Raimiti is part of the stay: the only way in is by boat, a run of roughly ninety minutes across the Fakarava lagoon, past motu islets, beaches, and coconut groves before the water narrows and the scenery turns wilder. The pension sits on the atoll's far side from the airport, tucked into a coconut plantation between lagoon and open sea, with no road connecting it to anything. There is no set list of activities here. Staff suggest a plan each morning based on the wind and the day's tides, and guests are free to take it or not. Bungalows come in four styles. The Master and Family Crusoe bungalows face the reef side of the motu with panoramic ocean views, while the five Robinson bungalows look over the lagoon, each with a private hot-water shower and fan. Meals are served in an open-sided restaurant, sometimes outdoors under kahaia trees, announced by the sound of a conch shell rather than a bell. You can watch manta rays pass close to the terrace in season, or hear humpback whales offshore. Snorkelling gear and kayaks are free to use. It is a quiet, deliberately under-explained place, closer to a working coconut grove with rooms than a resort, and it asks guests to arrive without a fixed itinerary.
