Rajamaa

Rajamaa is set on Pitkäsaari, a small island in the River Muonio where Sweden meets Finland, some 200 kilometres above the Arctic Circle. The Malmström family has run it since 1986, and the village around it, Muonionalusta, counts seven residents, two of them Lars and Kaisu. Ten hotel-chalets make up the accommodation, five smaller at 25 m² and five larger at 46 m², each with its own shower room, mini-kitchen, and drying closet. All were renovated in 2018 with support from EU rural development funds, and stand in red-painted timber with white corners, the standard look of a Swedish hotel-chalet. A main building holds reception, dining room, and sauna. Finnish is the working language of the valley and of the staff here. The kitchen leans on local produce, and waste is sorted as a matter of course; Rajamaa belongs to the Swedish Ecotourism Society and carries the Nature's Best Sweden mark. Guests fish the Muonio for salmon, pike, and grayling, paddle the Arctic Canoe Route, or head out by snowmobile and dog sled in winter. You can walk onto the frozen river directly from the island. Guiding extends to meetings with Sámi reindeer herders nearby, part of the region's living culture rather than a staged excursion.
