Sabalo Lodge

Set on Isla Violin at the mouth of the Sierpe River, this eco-lodge faces the largest mangrove system in Central America, with the Térraba-Sierpe wetlands stretching toward the Pacific. Primary rainforest closes in behind it, and private beaches lie a short walk beyond the tree line. Reached only by boat from Sierpe, the lodge is run by a local family who handle cooking, guiding, and transport themselves. Cabanas and standard rooms sit near the main house, where three home-cooked meals are served daily; four tents, each with two single beds or one double, offer a simpler stay under heavy tarpaulin roofs, with showers shared at the main building. Trails lead through the reserve the lodge protects, home to capuchin monkeys and poison dart frogs. Corcovado National Park lies within boat range, its San Pedrillo and Sirena stations reachable on day tours, and Caño Island's reef sits about 20 km offshore, its waters clear enough for snorkelling over rays and reef fish. Kayak tours run through the mangrove channels by day and, on quieter nights, by moonlight, when the water can carry a faint bioluminescent glow. An organic farm on site supplies produce for the kitchen. It is a quiet, working corner of the Osa Peninsula, not a polished one.
