Salama & Mbuyuni Bungalows
A Spanish-run garden hotel in Matemwe, ten minutes from the beach
Skip to product information
Matemwe is a village on Zanzibar's northeast coast, and Salama & Mbuyuni Bungalows is set among its shops and homes, ten minutes' walk from the sand. A Spanish family opened the hotel in 2018 and still runs it, with staff drawn entirely from the local community. The grounds hold three pools, a tropical garden, and a yoga room used for morning classes several days a week. Rooms are wooden bungalows and villas, ground floor or lofted, each with a private terrace, mosquito nets, and a fan rather than air conditioning. The Haven Lodge sleeps up to four with a double bed and two singles; the villas run to 50 square metres and take up to five guests across two bedrooms. Breakfast is a buffet, included for all guests. Massage and spa treatments run on request, and the hotel arranges day trips to Mnemba Atoll, Jozani Forest, and Stone Town. Solar panels and backup batteries keep power steady through outages. It is a small hotel, built around close contact between staff and guests rather than scale.
