Savanna Orinoquia Lodge

Settled between two waterways on Colombia's eastern plains, Savanna Orinoquia Lodge stands where the Cravo Sur River meets the Canacavare channel in the department of Casanare, a region long worked by cattle herders and rice growers. The lodge takes its bungalows into a landscape of savanna, wetland, and gallery forest, part of sixteen ecosystems that make up this stretch of the Orinoquía basin. It is a compact stay. Each bungalow has Wi-Fi, a minibar, and a television, along with a reusable water flask in place of bottled water. Guides lead walks through dense forest tracks and along the riverbank, tracking a bird list that runs past 300 species, among them herons, kingfishers, and macaws. Bongo boat trips run along the Canacavare channel and, river levels allowing, down the Cravo Sur itself, where the banks widen into sandbanks used for fishing and, in the dry season, beach fires at dusk. Horseback rides follow the routes local cowhands still use to move cattle. The kitchen draws on regional staples such as river fish, rice, and cassava, with vegetarian and health-focused menus available. Staff are drawn entirely from the surrounding communities, and the lodge takes part in monitoring work on jaguar, armadillo, and river turtle populations. Access is only by pre-arranged transport; there is no public road directly to the gate.
