Set on the southern shore of the Rufiji River, inside the 30,893 sq km reach of Nyerere National Park, Selous Wilderness Camp holds six tents and no more. Five sleep two to three guests; one larger family tent takes three to five. Each has a proper bed, an ensuite bathroom with outside shower, and solar power that runs mornings and evenings only. A terrace off each tent looks straight onto the river, where hippos and crocodiles pass below the borassus palms.
Field guides run game drives, boat safaris, sundowner cruises and walking safaris through riparian forest and open bush, along with a village tour to the nearest settlement. For a night away from camp, a fly camp on the riverbank sleeps up to six under canvas, with a warm bucket shower and two Maasai keeping watch by the fire. You wake to whatever animal has come down to drink before you.
Back at camp, a plunge pool sits shaded near the bar, with vervet monkeys working the trees overhead. Dinner moves between a handful of spots around camp, the fireside table among the favourites. More than seventy per cent of the camp's unskilled staff come from the neighbouring community, and produce is bought locally where possible. Access is by road from Dar es Salaam or by air to Mtemwere airstrip, followed by a river crossing to reach the camp.
