Semilla Verde Boutique Hotel
Giant tortoises are the neighbours here, not an excursion. Semilla Verde Boutique Hotel sits on the slopes of an extinct volcano on Santa Cruz Island, roughly 12 km, or a 12 to 15 minute taxi ride, from the docks at Puerto Ayora. The nine rooms are simple and individual, each with a private terrace and a hammock, and each looking out over a canopy of replanted native trees rather than a garden. Below the rooms runs a shade-grown coffee plantation, still worked, still producing, and tortoises pass through it on their own schedule. The forest itself covers twelve acres, laced with trails that lead nowhere in particular except further into the trees. At night the sky over the estate is dark enough for the Milky Way, and barn owls and bats work the clearings. Meals are cooked in-house and taken communally, in one of three lounge areas or out on a raised terrace facing the Galapagos National Park and the marine reserve beyond it. A swimming pool and a small yoga studio round out the amenities, though the real draw is stillness: no other building sits within view. Day trips to Bartolome, North Seymour, Santa Fe and South Plazas run from the hotel by small boat, arranged with local operators and a naturalist guide. Check-in details and packages are handled directly by the hotel.
