Seven Spirit Bay Wilderness Lodge
Twenty-four villas on Cobourg Peninsula, reachable only by air or boat
The Cobourg Peninsula holds Seven Spirit Bay on its western flank, facing Port Essington across a bay of coral reef and red rock cliffs. There is no road in. Guests arrive by charter flight from Darwin, a journey of about 45 minutes, or by boat from the ranger station at Black Point. The lodge sits inside Garig Gunak Barlu National Park, a Ramsar-listed wetland that covers the whole peninsula and its surrounding waters, with more than 200 bird species recorded across its marshes and forests.
Twenty-four villas stand among native tropical forest above Coral Bay, each with a private deck facing the water. Rooms are air-conditioned, with louvred windows, ceiling fans, and a bathroom built around a double vanity. You can watch dolphins, turtles, and dugong move through the shallows from the main lodge terrace, where the bar and restaurant open onto the bay. Saltwater crocodiles and manta rays share the same waters, while buffalo and banteng cattle still range through the bush inland.
A lodge boat, the MV Arafura, runs marine trips along the coast, and 4WD safaris head out to Rainbow Beach and Vashon Head. Built in 1990, the lodge was substantially redeveloped after Outback Spirit took ownership in 2015. It operates as a dedicated fishing lodge during the barramundi runoff and build-up seasons, in March-April and October-November.
