Shivapuri Heights Cottage
Terraces face south across the Kathmandu Valley, catching sun through the day and the smell of woodsmoke and pine from the surrounding forest. Shivapuri Heights Cottage sits at 6,000 feet on the edge of Shivapuri National Park, two acres of garden and traditionally built cottages set among trees above Budhanilkantha. Meals come from what the kitchen garden yields that day. There is no fixed menu; the chef cooks whatever is fresh, and guests eat family-style, often trading stories with travellers from other countries at the same table. Rooms are split across a main cottage, a smaller cottage, the Jasmine House, and two deluxe tents with private bathrooms, eighteen beds in total. Cottages carry solar-heated water and wireless internet, plain comforts rather than decoration. Neeru's outdoor spa sits in its own garden setting, with a plunge pool for a cold dip after a walk. Paths lead from the property into the national park and on to nearby monasteries, a stretch-your-legs walk rather than a mapped trek. You can hear birds and little else from the terrace most mornings. It works as a base for hiking, for yoga, or simply for sitting with a book from the library, thirty minutes by road from central Kathmandu yet clear of its traffic and noise.
