Akarabo Nursery

Akarabo means "little flower" in Kinyarwanda, and this on-site nursery began Singita Kwitonda's effort to reforest and rehabilitate habitat for Rwanda's mountain gorillas. What started as 60,000 saplings bought from local growers, earmarked for the 178 acres the lodge sits on within Volcanoes National Park, has grown to 250,000 and counting. Guests walk rows of young trees, herb beds, and the chef's farm-to-table vegetable garden. A teahouse serves fresh herbal brews, while local artisans, a basket weaver, a seamstress, and a stick carver, demonstrate their crafts on site. It is a working reforestation project guests can wander through.
