Solstrand Hotel & Bad

Facing open water, the fjord fills nearly every window at Solstrand. Bjørnafjorden runs wide and grey-blue below the hotel, with the Kvinnherad mountains rising opposite, and gulls mark the turn of the seasons as much as any calendar. The hotel began as a seawater bathing house in 1896, and swimming remains central: guests still move between an indoor pool, an outdoor pool and saunas, all included in the stay. It is a working spa town more than a resort. Fish and shellfish from the fjord, lamb from the western valleys, and vegetables grown nearby set the kitchen's course, changing with what the season brings in. The 134 rooms are finished in wood, stone and wool, plain materials chosen to hold up against damp sea air. Standard rooms look onto the garden; corner rooms take a 180-degree sweep of water and peak. The Historical Junior Suites sit in the 1896 main building, each cut with its own alcove and a private balcony over the lawns. You can hear the water from most rooms with a window cracked open. Spa treatments draw on Nordic materials too: juniper oil, mineral baths, seaweed wraps drawn from the coastline itself. Bergen airport lies 30 km away, close enough for a short transfer, far enough that the fjord keeps its quiet. Check-in is from 3pm.
