Storfjord Hotel

Built from handcrafted log walls under a sod roof, Storfjord Hotel keeps the scent of timber in every room. The roof was chosen for its insulation and its way of settling the building into the hillside, both visually and ecologically. Thirty rooms are spread across four timber buildings, and no two look quite alike; some wake to forest, others to fjord. The Storfjord Suite is the largest, at 88 square metres, with an open fireplace, a private balcony over the fjord, and views to the mountains beyond.

Dinner shifts by season and by room. In the main restaurant, cooking stays regional and fire-lit; in the boathouse, a chef works a five-course menu over an open hearth while the fjord sits still outside. There is also a lavvo for open-fire meals in the forest. Herbs and vegetables come from the hotel's own garden and greenhouse, and its beehives supply honey for the kitchen and the breakfast buffet.

The wellness area is small by design: outdoor jacuzzis, a sauna facing the trees, and a short list of treatments booked ahead. Living rooms double as quiet common ground, where guests read, knit, or work through a puzzle by the fire. It is a thirty-minute drive from Ålesund. Guest yachts can moor at the hotel quay, and helicopter transfer can be arranged through reception.
