Tabor Hotel Lalibela

Named for Debre Tabor, the mountain at whose base it stands, Tabor Hotel takes its cue from Lalibela's own claim to be a second Jerusalem. The town's rock-hewn churches sit close by: the second cluster five minutes on foot, the first about ten. Shops and a cash machine are within two minutes' walk, so errands do not eat into the day. The hotel is modest in scale and built more recently than much of the town around it, a plain base rather than a landmark in its own right. Rooms come in single, double and twin configurations, each fitted with the basics guests need and nothing they do not. A garden draws birds through the day, and a private terrace looks over it, a good spot for morning coffee before the churches open to visitors. Breakfast is cooked fresh on site, porridge with banana and honey among the regulars mentioned by guests. Wi-Fi runs through the building at no extra cost, though power cuts by day can slow it. Staff arrange guided visits to the churches, nearby monasteries, mountain treks and horse rides, useful groundwork given how much of Lalibela rewards a good guide. Check-in and out follow standard hotel hours. It suits travellers who want a clean, central base near the churches, not a show hotel.
