Set at the confluence of the Luangwa and Mwaleshi Rivers in North Luangwa National Park, Takwela Camp is two chalets built from brick, thatch, and materials sourced within the region. One chalet holds a king bed; the other holds two doubles. Each has an en-suite shower, basin, and toilet with running hot water, plus a veranda facing the rivers. The camp was rebuilt in 2021 and runs on solar power.
Guided walks depart with an armed national-park scout and a professional guide. Morning game drives leave early and pause mid-morning for tea and a snack at a scenic spot. Afternoon drives continue after dark with a spotlight, led by a guide and tracker. You can watch hippos from the bank during sundowners near camp. The Luangwa Valley holds one of Africa's highest concentrations of hippos and crocodiles, plus elephant, buffalo, lion, and leopard. Cookson's wildebeest and Thornicroft's giraffe are endemic sub-species. Over four hundred bird species have been recorded in North Luangwa.
The camp accommodates four guests. Meals are prepared on-site and served communally. Laundry is complimentary. Check-in is at noon; check-out at ten. The camp operates from mid-June to the end of October.
