Set inside a residential enclave in Ciudad Cariari, Terrazas de Golf occupies a house once lived in by a single family before it opened as a hotel in January 2011. The Cariari Country Club golf course borders the property, and guests can arrange temporary membership for its pool, tennis courts and fairways. San José's international airport is five kilometres away. It is a small place, with eleven air-conditioned rooms, each fitted with a 32-inch television, safe box, coffee maker and free Wi-Fi. Solar panels cover the hotel's own energy needs, and an electric car charging point sits free for guests, a detail that fits its self-described environmental policy. Breakfast comes with the room rate, and a shuttle can meet guests at the airport free of charge on stays of three nights or longer. Massage and nurse services are available on request, useful for the medical tourism and long-stay guests the hotel specifically courts. The result feels closer to a private residence run to hotel standards than a conventional business hotel, despite sitting near several convention centres and free-trade zones. Downtown San José is ten kilometres off. For anyone shuttling between meetings at the Pedregal or Wyndham Herradura centres and a quiet place to sleep, the location does the work; the golf course next door does the rest.
