The Bodmin Jail Hotel

Stone corridors and iron ironwork are still the frame here; the finish inside them is entirely contemporary. Each guest room is built from three former jail cells, joined into a single space with underfloor heating, air conditioning and a private bathroom. Bathrooms carry freestanding baths and separate rainfall showers, with Noble Isle amenities and Egyptian cotton linen on the beds. It is a small, particular kind of conversion. The building is Grade II listed, so certain areas, including the Chapel Restaurant and the Lounge Bar, are reached by stairs only, no lift. That restaurant occupies the jail's former chapel and serves Cornish and Mediterranean dishes under the original roof. Rooms come in three configurations: a king or twin cell, a family cell with a sofa bed for up to four guests, and an accessible cell with a wet room, alarm cords and 24-hour assistance. Dogs up to 20kg are welcome under a dedicated package, with a bed and bowl provided; furniture stays reserved for people. Guests can also book themed overnight packages built around the building's history as a prison, including guided tours and set menus, alongside straightforward bed-and-breakfast or dinner-inclusive rates. The jail closed to prisoners long ago. What is left is a working hotel with a gym, a front desk and a history you can still see in the walls.
