The Bolder Skylodge

Designed by architect John Birger Grytdal and raised above the Lysefjord cliffs, the SkyLodge cabins were conceived as part of The Bolder's wider building programme on a 170-hectare plot near Forsand. Each of the two lodges stands on a single column, a structural choice made to keep the footprint on the pine-and-boulder terrain as small as possible. The cube form is wrapped in Canadian cedar and rises over two floors within 22 square metres. It sways slightly in strong wind. Inside, two double bedrooms sleep up to four guests, alongside a Vipp-designed kitchen, a compact bathroom and a dining area facing the fjord. The main bedroom has a 180-degree view and a skylight, with beds that adjust for sleeping under open sky. The design won Best Cabin Project of the Year in Norway for 2020. There is no front desk; guests manage their own arrival and stay under a self-serve arrangement, with contact available by phone or email during office hours. Stavanger sits around 40 minutes away by car, and its restaurant scene, including several Michelin-listed kitchens, gives an easy counterpoint to the quiet of the lodge. Preikestolen and other Lysefjord landmarks lie within reach for guests who want to walk before returning to the cliff-edge cabin.
