The Chilko Experience Wilderness Resort
The Chilko Experience is a cluster of six log cabins set on a private lake deep in the Chilcotin Plateau, ringed by the Coastal Mountains of British Columbia. It runs seasonally, open from May to October, and reaching it takes effort: a direct charter flight of about one hour from Vancouver, or a scenic ten-hour drive along the Fraser River for those who prefer the road. Power and phone signal are scarce here. The nearest grocery store is 200 miles off, the power grid 40 miles away, and at night the stars are close enough to touch. Each cabin is built by hand from log or timber frame and furnished individually, some with full kitchens, all with private decks and en-suite bathrooms. Days run to grizzly bear viewing at the Chilko River estuary, kayaking and paddleboarding on glass-still water, fly-fishing for bull trout, or a hike toward the alpine. Meals are taken at Tim's House, a communal lodge with a maple dining table and views that run to the mountains, cooked by a chef known across Canada. The Tower House, a three-storey log build with balconies on every floor, is kept for special occasions. It is not a place you pass through. Guests come for days, not a night, and the lodge is built around that scale of stay.
