The Green Ranch Lake Bosomtwe

Set on a hillside above Lake Bosomtwe, Ghana's only natural lake and one of the world's few meteorite crater lakes, the Green Ranch looks down on water and forest from a position that keeps it clear of the mosquitoes found closer to the shore. The lake sits in the Ashanti region, about an hour and a half from Kumasi by road. The ranch is a family-run stay built around horses. Eight semi-free roaming horses live on site, suited to riders from novice to advanced, with outings running from an hour to a full day around the lake. Accommodation is small: three handcrafted rooms and one eight-bed dormitory cabin, each fitted with Wi-Fi, a table fan, and a bathroom, while the dormitory shares one. A stilted tree lounge and a private stretch of beach sit below, along with a kayak and a canoe-like pirogue for four. The kitchen serves lacto-vegetarian meals cooked from the ranch's own organic produce and local markets, taken on a veranda with a wide view across the lake and hills. Drinking water comes from a borehole drilled 45 metres down, filtered and served in glass bottles rather than plastic. Horse riding must be booked in advance. The lake itself, registered by UNESCO as a biosphere in 2018, is considered sacred by the surrounding communities, who observe a ban on the dugout canoes used elsewhere in the country.
