The Outpost Lodge

Timber walls and a wood-fired hearth fill the ground floor, the old post counter long gone but the building's shape unchanged. The lodge sits in Mårdsel, a hamlet south of the Arctic Circle with six year-round residents, in Swedish Lapland's forest near the Råne River. It is a compact stay. Five bedrooms, three showers and two toilets spread across two floors and a basement, alongside a kitchen, two lounges and a dining room built for a full group at one table. The basement holds an electric sauna with its own shower, plus a bootroom that opens straight outside so wet gear stays off the stairs. A hot tub sits on the veranda, steam rising against night air that runs well below freezing. Guests take the whole lodge on an exclusive, full-board basis, with breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks included and dinners cooked nightly by the hosts, Thomas and Karin, drawing on Norrland cooking. A short walk from the door leads into unlit forest dark enough for the northern lights to show clearly overhead. By day, guests head out by snowmobile, dogsled or snowshoe, or down to the river for summer fishing. Luleå Airport is roughly 1.5 hours by road. The lodge runs from November through April and holds two to twelve people at a time.
