The Village Lodge Jalikhar
The Village Lodge is set in Jalikhar, in the middle of Bumthang Valley. Farmland runs up to its walls, and low hills close the view on every side. The lodge holds nine rooms, each heated and fitted with its own bathroom, built to a scale that keeps the place quiet rather than grand. Modern comforts are present but understated, the kind that matter more in a mountain valley than they announce themselves. Bumthang itself is regarded as Bhutan's spiritual heartland, and the lodge is positioned as a plain, comfortable base for exploring it rather than a destination in itself. Guests can walk or cycle straight out from the property into the surrounding farmland, and picnicking in the nearby hills is a short outing rather than an expedition. It is a compact stay. The pace here is set by the valley: mornings are still, and the loudest sound most days is livestock or wind through the fields. Rooms are simple and warm, designed less for display than for rest after days spent out among Bumthang's temples and farm villages. There is no pretence of scale or spectacle, only a working landscape and a small, well-run lodge inside it, close enough to the valley floor that the outdoors is never far from the door.
