The Warden's House

Morning here starts with a boat's-width of river outside the window and a hornbill calling from the arjun trees. The Warden's House is a four-suite bungalow set on seven acres along a 300-metre stretch of the Menik River, a fifteen-minute drive from Block 5 of Yala National Park. Each suite carries its own name, drawn from Sri Lanka's national parks: Kumana, Yala, Wilpattu, Horton Plains. Rooms come with air conditioning and Wi-Fi, plain comforts for a stay built around what lies outside them. Days run between temple and terrain. The Sithulpawwa rock monastery, cut in the 2nd century BC, is close enough for an afternoon climb; from its summit, Yala's plains spread out below a white stupa. Closer to home, a picnic under riverside canopy makes for slow birdwatching, with grey hornbills and jungle fowl among the residents. Paddy fields and village paths thread the land beyond the seven acres, open to anyone keen to walk them. A pool sits within the grounds for the hours between excursions. The property belongs to Island Life Sri Lanka's small portfolio, alongside the Galle Fort Hotel and a plantation bungalow at Thotalagala.
