The White Star Tavern, Southampton
The White Star Tavern is on Oxford Street, in central Southampton, a short walk from the cruise terminals and West Quay. The building is historic, so rooms vary in size and shape rather than following a single template. Each is named after a vessel from the White Star Line fleet, split across Lower, Middle and Upper Deck categories, a nod to the city's shipping past. Comfy Cabin rooms take a king-size bed and a monsoon shower or roll-top bath; Cosy Cabin rooms run smaller with a kingsize double; Snug Cabin suits one traveller, with a deluxe bed and en suite shower. All come with Egyptian cotton sheets, a stocked minibar and a flat-screen television. Breakfast is included in the room rate. Downstairs, the restaurant and bar serve British food built from Hampshire produce, alongside five cask ales and 70 wines by the glass or bottle. There is a terrace for outdoor meals when the weather allows, and a private room for meetings or parties. You can walk to the SeaCity Museum in around 20 minutes, cutting through Palmerston Park on the way. Southampton Central station lies about a mile to the north-west. Reception runs from 7am to 9.30pm, with check-in from 3pm and check-out at 11am. Dog-friendly rooms are available on request, and dogs may join guests in the bar and garden.
