Three Tree Hill is a 24-bed lodge owned and hosted by Simon and Cheryl Blackburn in the Drakensberg foothills, 27 kilometres from the N3 highway near Bergville. The property holds Fair Trade certification and sits on a working Brahman cattle farm overlooking Spioenkop Game Reserve. Six double cottages accommodate couples and single travellers; three two-bedroom family cottages hold up to four children in bunk-bed rooms stocked with toys and books. Cottages feature corrugated-iron cladding, wood-panelled interiors, air conditioning, heated towel rails, overhead fans, and private decks with views across the valley. En-suite bathrooms include bath and shower. Churchill's Cottage is a self-contained villa with two bedrooms, a private plunge pool, and open-plan kitchen. Burchell's Cottage sits on a ridge with panoramic reserve views.
The main lodge is open-plan, with four sets of double doors leading to a wide verandah and a log fire in winter. The dining room serves three-course farm-style dinners at private tables, with lunches of stone-ground bread, charcuterie, and artisan cheese. A 3000-book library dedicated to Molly Blackburn, who campaigned for women's and children's rights during apartheid, holds wildlife, nature, and history titles. An underground wine cellar beneath the library stocks South African organic, biodynamic, and women-made wines. The swimming pool lies beneath an acacia canopy, with water temperature ranging from 18 to 24 degrees Celsius.
Guided horse trails, game walks in Spioenkop Game Reserve, and battlefield tours of the Anglo-Boer War sites depart from the lodge. Self-guided hiking trails cross the farm. The Northern Drakensberg and Champagne Valley lie within an hour's drive.
