Tides Reach Resort

The water here runs calm and clear, protected on this side of Taveuni from the open swell. Tides Reach Resort sits on a private beach in Matei, on Fiji's Garden Island, where a living coral reef starts just off the sand. Nine hundred square feet or more of villa opens straight onto that view: the Standard Beachfront Villas run to 800 square feet, the Deluxe to 1,200, each with a king bed, an outdoor shower and a deck facing the water. Furnishings come from a Malibu design house, mixing European, South African and Indonesian pieces, and every villa keeps two staff members on call in the deluxe category, one in the standard. It is a short stay in scale but a full one in reach. Guests dive Rainbow Reef with the dive shop next door, cast for giant trevally and marlin offshore, or paddle the lagoon on kayaks and boards supplied at no extra cost. E-bikes cover the coastal roads and village routes inland. Meals run three times daily, cooked to order, and a kava ceremony and meke dance are held on site for guests who want the island's culture without leaving the beach. Airport transfers from Taveuni are included. The result reads less like a Fiji classic and more like a compact, well-run base built around one very good stretch of reef.
